RDR can make a MID look healthy while you refund a pile of Mastercard disputes in the background. This split shows the hidden points.

Pair: RDR mix vs primary chargebacks on Chargebacks. What RDR is: RDR.

The two ratios

Use the same MID and the same window.

Primary ratio: primary bank CBs ÷ approved sales. This is the line most processors watch. The sample threshold is 0.90%.

If-RDR-were-primary: (primary CBs + RDR cases) ÷ approved sales. Hidden points are the gap.

The sample is 40 primary CBs, 55 RDR cases, 8,640 approved sales. Primary is about 0.46%. If RDR sat in primary you would show about 1.10%. That is already over a 0.90% count line. The calm primary chart was the RDR bill.

RDR share of disputes in that sample is 55 / (40 + 55), about 58%. A shop that “solved chargebacks” by opening the rules to everything will print a number like that.

What to do with hidden points

If hidden points are large and primary is calm, you are buying refunds. Tighten rules (amount, reason, shipped vs not) so RDR does not eat winnable cases — write the rule sheet. If hidden points are small and primary is rising, RDR is not the hole. Open the prevention map.

Approved sales, not attempts. Attempts in a polluted cascade inflate the denominator and hide both ratios.

When this fails

Treating RDR as free because primary looks calm. Mixing alert refunds into the RDR count. Not getting the processor’s RDR-in-ratio rule in writing.

Related: refunds (RDR is a refund), MIDs (enrollment and the ratio).

Procedure

  1. Count primary CBs and RDR cases on the same MID and window.
  2. Use approved sales, not attempts.
  3. Read the hidden points. That is the bill you would pay without RDR.
  4. Ask in writing whether RDR sits in primary here.

Failure modes

  • Treating RDR as free because the primary ratio looks calm.
  • Mixing alert refunds into RDR count.
  • Not getting the processor’s RDR-in-ratio rule in writing.

Worked example

None on this page yet. When one lands it will be a real case: what broke, the number, and what changed. Not a composite.

FAQ

If primary looks fine, is RDR free?
No. You still lose the sale and pay a per-case fee. Hidden points are what the ratio would show if those cases had been primary CBs.
Do alert refunds count as RDR in this split?
No. Ethoca and CDRN are a different clock. Mixing them into the RDR count hides both the RDR bill and the alert bill.
How do I know RDR is out of primary?
Get this processor’s rule in writing. Most programs exclude it. Some do not. Do not guess from a reseller CSV.
