An ACH return is not a card chargeback

How to run thisChargebacks4 steps
GuideACH return vs card chargeback — claim map · Calculator lives in the articleOpen

ACH returns (NACHA reason codes, bank return windows) are not card chargebacks. Same customer can bounce an ACH pull and later file a card dispute on a different sale — those are still two doors. Pasting Visa evidence into an ACH return wastes the clock that actually moves the money.

Pair: ACH return vs card chargeback — claim map on Chargebacks. Wallet / PayPal doors: wallet vs card CB. Card prevention stack stays on prevention stack.

What to separate

Network. ACH / NACHA vs Visa / Mastercard.

Code. R01 / R10-family style returns vs 10.4 / 13.1 style card codes.

Clock. ACH return windows (often banking days) vs alert hours / CB days.

Scorecard. Card ratio programs do not score ACH returns as primary CBs — confirm this acquirer’s ACH monitoring separately.

What not to do

Do not invent an ACH “good return rate” chip. Do not staff ACH returns on the Ethoca queue by habit. Do not call every bank debit a chargeback. Do not mix ACH NSF with card NSF dunning without naming the rail.

Procedure

  1. Name the rail — ACH vs card.
  2. Use the ACH return reason and processor path.
  3. Keep card ratio math on card disputes only.
  4. Track ACH monitoring separately in writing.

Failure modes

  • Mixing ACH returns into VAMP / ECM counts.
  • Sending Visa packets for ACH returns.
  • Staffing ACH on Ethoca hours.
  • Inventing an ACH return-rate chip.

Worked example

None on this page yet. When one lands it will be a real case: what broke, the number, and what changed. Not a composite.
