Ask who owns a BNPL dispute

BNPL (Affirm, Klarna, Afterpay, PayPal Pay in 4, and siblings) often puts the provider between you and the buyer’s payment method. A “chargeback” email may be a provider claim, a card dispute on the provider’s MID, or — less often — a hit on your merchant account. Guessing which door owns the fight is how you miss the clock that actually debits you.

Pair: BNPL dispute ownership — claim map on Chargebacks. Amazon’s door is separate: A-to-z. Wallet / PayPal doors: wallet vs card CB. ACH returns are another rail: ACH return vs card chargeback.

What to get in writing

Who the buyer disputes with — provider app / portal vs their card issuer vs you.

Whose MID takes the debit — provider’s, yours, or a marketplace settlement clawback.

Evidence channel — provider ticket fields vs network reason-code pack.

Refund overlap — whether a provider credit still allows a second debit (refund then CB).

What not to do

Do not treat every BNPL email as a Visa 10.4. Do not ignore a provider portal clock because “we don’t have a chargeback.” Do not invent which brand “always” owns disputes — type this agreement. Do not paste Amazon A-to-z rules onto Klarna.

Related: Chargebacks, A-to-z, refund then CB, Payments.

Procedure

  1. Name the BNPL brand and checkout path.
  2. Ask whose MID takes the debit.
  3. Ask which evidence channel and deadline apply.
  4. Watch overlap if a provider credit already posted.

Failure modes

  • Treating every BNPL email as a Visa CB on your MID.
  • Ignoring the provider portal clock.
  • Pasting A-to-z rules onto BNPL.
  • Sending a third credit after provider refund + bank debit.

Worked example

None on this page yet. When one lands it will be a real case: what broke, the number, and what changed. Not a composite.

FAQ

Is a Klarna claim a Visa chargeback on my MID?
Often no — many BNPL paths are provider claims. Some still land as card disputes. Get this agreement’s rule in writing.
Can I send a Visa packet into the BNPL portal?
Only if that portal asks for network evidence. Do not paste a 10.4 pack into a provider ticket by habit.
Is this Amazon A-to-z?
No. [A-to-z](/manuals/amazon-a-to-z) is Amazon’s door. This page is BNPL provider ownership.
