A-to-z is not a bank chargeback
Amazon A-to-z is Amazon’s claim process. A bank chargeback is the issuer pulling the sale. They are two doors. Mixing them is how you credit twice or miss the clock that actually kills you.
Pair: A-to-z vs chargeback on Refunds. BNPL provider doors: BNPL dispute ownership. Two credits on one ticket is a different job: Chargeback after you already refunded. FBA fee math is a different job.
Who answers
FBA A-to-z. Amazon held the unit. Amazon answers the claim. You do not send a Visa packet into Seller Central. You do watch the order. If the buyer also calls the bank, that second door is yours or your acquirer’s.
FBM A-to-z. You held the unit. You answer in Seller Central on Amazon’s clock. Tracking, the listing, and the message you already sent the buyer. Missing that clock loses the claim even when the bank never files.
Issuer chargeback. The card network is pulling the sale. Work it like any other chargeback on the merchant account that took the card. Amazon’s case id is not a Visa reason code. Do not paste an A-to-z win into a 10.4 packet and stop.
Amazon already paid them, then the bank filed. Two messages. Both can debit you. Do not send a third credit. Reverse the overlap.
They skipped Amazon and went to the bank. There is no A-to-z to “win.” Run the chargeback.
Payment path matters. If they paid Amazon (Amazon Pay, or the checkout Amazon owns), Amazon is in the money movement. If they paid your merchant account, the chargeback sits on that account even when the order lived in Seller Central.
After you pick the row
If it is FBA A-to-z only, let Amazon work it and watch for a bank filing. If it is FBM, answer Seller Central now. If a bank case exists, leave Amazon’s portal and work the chargeback. If Amazon already refunded, do not refund again.
After a denial, Amazon’s second look is a different job: A-to-z appeal window. After a grant on FBA, fee lines: A-to-z FBA fees.
Related: Chargebacks (the bank case), Stock (FBA inventory is Amazon’s unit), MIDs (the account the card actually hit).
Procedure
- Name FBA or FBM.
- Name whether a bank case exists.
- If FBA and no bank case, let Amazon work it and watch.
- If FBM, answer Seller Central now.
- If a bank case exists, work the chargeback. Do not credit twice.
Failure modes
- Sending a Visa packet into Seller Central.
- Crediting again after Amazon already refunded and the issuer filed.
- Ignoring an FBM clock because you thought it was a chargeback.
- Assuming Amazon owns a pull that hit your merchant account.
Worked example
None on this page yet. When one lands it will be a real case: what broke, the number, and what changed. Not a composite.
Glossary
- A-to-z
- Amazon’s claim process. Not a Visa or Mastercard chargeback. A separate clock and a separate portal.
- FBA
- Fulfilled by Amazon. Amazon held the unit, so Amazon answers the A-to-z. A bank filing is still a chargeback.

FAQ
- Is an Amazon A-to-z claim a Visa chargeback?
- No. A-to-z is Amazon’s claim. A bank chargeback is a separate message. They can both hit the same order.
- Who answers an FBA A-to-z?
- Amazon. They held the unit. You still watch whether the buyer also files at the bank.
- Amazon already refunded. The issuer then filed. Do I refund again?
- No. That is two credits. Reverse the overlap. Do not send a second payment.
