Store credit does not stop a bank chargeback
Store credit is a CS retention tool. A processor refund reverses the card sale. A chargeback already took the money. Only the middle one (or a win) stops the bank path. Mixing them is how you credit the shopper and still eat the CB.
Pair: Store credit vs refund path on Refunds.
Which door
No dispute yet — unhappy customer. Store credit or refund is a margin choice. Credit can save the relationship. It does not protect a MID.
Alert in window (CDRN / Ethoca). Refund or cancel on the card. Store credit does not clear the alert. Fee still bills if you miss.
Chargeback posted. Fight or accept. Do not stack store credit on a lost case.
RDR already fired. Liability accepted by rule. Do not also refund manually unless recon says the RDR credit failed.
What not to do
Do not tell CS that credit “counts as a refund” for alerts. Do not credit twice after a CB. Do not confuse helpdesk credit with processor refund lines on the statement.
Related: Refunds, inquiry vs alert, alert response clocks.
Procedure
- Name the door: CS only, alert, CB, RDR, or retrieval.
- Alert or CB → processor path or fight.
- CS-only → credit or refund by margin.
- Never stack credit on a lost CB.
Failure modes
- Offering credit instead of reversing an alert.
- Crediting after a CB already posted.
- Calling helpdesk credit a processor refund on the statement.
Worked example
None on this page yet. When one lands it will be a real case: what broke, the number, and what changed. Not a composite.

FAQ
- Can I offer store credit instead of refunding an alert?
- No. CDRN and Ethoca want the sale reversed on the card. Credit in your store does not stop the filing.
- Does store credit help after a chargeback posts?
- No. The bank already took the money. Credit on top is a second gift.
- When is store credit the right move?
- Keep-the-customer saves when there is no alert and no bank dispute — and the card is not already filing.
