MCC on the MID

An MCC (Merchant Category Code) is a four-digit code from ISO 18245 that the acquirer assigns when the MID is underwritten. Visa and Mastercard use it for interchange, monitoring, and which offers they will even let onto the network. The homepage category in Shopify is not an MCC.

Pair: MCC risk lookup.

Why processors and Visa care

The code is how the brand decides what kind of merchant you are. Grocery (5411) is not continuity (5968). Digital goods (5816/5817) are not apparel (5691). High-risk codes — especially 5966–5969 direct marketing, 5816/5817 digital goods, 7995 gambling — come with stricter chargeback programs, more underwriting, and usually reserves and caps. That is acquiring reality, not a vibe.

Visa’s high-brand-risk and similar monitoring programs key off MCC plus CB ratios. An honest 5968 with a clean ratio can live. A 5411 that is secretly autoship nutra is an MCC mismatch. Mismatch reviews are how MIDs die while the ads still spend.

High-risk vs low

Low in the lookup means acquirers usually treat it as ordinary retail (grocery, clothing, restaurants). Elevated means they argue (5499 food specialty, 5999 misc retail, 5912 pharmacy). High-risk means you should expect the full high-risk packet: more documents, rolling reserve, lower caps, tighter dispute programs.

Subscription / continuity offers belong on 5968 unless the acquirer has explicitly written a different story. Hiding them on 5999 or 5411 is not a growth hack.

Tie to MIDs

One MID, one MCC (typical). Descriptor, MCC, and Order Insight have to describe the same offer. When you add autoship, the MCC conversation happens before you dump traffic onto that account. Enrollment of RDR / alerts / 3DS is per MID, and high-risk MCCs are the ones that need the stack first.

Look up the code that is actually on the application, not the code you wish you had.

Procedure

  1. Read the MCC on the MID application / processor portal, not the website.
  2. Match it to what you actually sell and how you bill (one-shot vs continuity).
  3. If it is 5968, budget for high-risk acquiring: reserves, caps, CB programs.
  4. If it is a low-risk retail code, do not put autoship on that MID.
  5. Descriptor, MCC, and Order Insight payload have to tell the same story.
  6. When the offer changes, the MCC conversation happens before the next dump of traffic.

Failure modes

  • Picking 5999 or 5411 because “it boards easier” while selling 5968 continuity.
  • Assuming the Shopify category is the MCC.
  • Changing the offer (one-shot → autoship) without telling the acquirer.
  • One MCC story across MIDs that process different SKUs.

Worked example

None on this page yet. When one lands it will be a real case: what broke, the number, and what changed. Not a composite.

Glossary

MCC
Merchant Category Code — a four-digit ISO 18245 code assigned at underwriting. Visa, Mastercard, and the acquirer price and monitor the MID by this code, not by the homepage.
High-risk MCC
Codes acquirers and card brands treat as monitored (direct marketing 5966–5969, digital goods 5816/5817, gambling 7995, and similar). Higher reserves, tighter CB programs, more questions. Not a moral category.
MCC mismatch
The offer, descriptor, or actually-processed volume does not match the MCC on the MID. A continuity vitamin on 5411 grocery is the usual example. Reviews and shutdowns follow.

No. Read the code on the MID application or processor portal. The homepage category is not underwriting.
Can I hide autoship on 5411?
Do not. Continuity belongs on 5968 unless the acquirer wrote a different story. Mismatch reviews follow.
