Recycle ladder is not a gateway cascade
Two retry machines get pasted into one slide. CRM recycle is Initial, Recycle 1, Recycle 2, Recycle 3+ on a Sticky / CheckoutChamp billing report — later tries on a written CRM schedule. Gateway cascade is extra issuer messages on one of those tries, often a second MID. Adding Recycle columns to cascade hops and calling it “recovery” invents a percent.
Pair: Recycle ladder vs cascade hops on Payment orchestration. Whether hops were worth the auths: cascade pollution. Soft-only count vs a written limit: retry window.
Name the machines
Initial / recycle 0 is the first CRM try for that bill. Routing is judged here.
Recycle 1–3+ are later CRM tries. They usually wait. They usually stay on the same CRM gateway mapping unless you changed it. Billing Report splits them so you can see which rung still fires.
Cascade hops are extra processor messages inside one of those tries. Soft decline → next MID in the same minute is cascade, not Recycle 2.
Do not mix Transaction Summary unique declines into this ladder. That grain already collapsed retries — open CRM unique declines vs gateway messages.
How to type it
Pull Initial, Recycle 1, Recycle 2, Recycle 3+ from the billing report for one window. Blank rungs are zero. The calculator returns recycle share of the CRM ladder — mix, not save rate.
If a cascade ran, type gateway extra hops: issuer messages beyond those CRM rows. They sit on top of the ladder. They are not Recycle 4.
We do not fill a healthy recycle mix. A fat Recycle 3+ column is a schedule still firing, not proof it earns.
What not to do
Do not invent a recovery % from Recycle counts. Do not call Recycle 1 a cascade. Do not hop hard fails onto the next MID and label it Recycle. Do not paste a vendor “typical recycle lift.” Soft retries still sit inside the written retry window. Hard fails still die on decline playbook.

Procedure
- Pull Initial / Recycle 1–3+ for one window.
- Blank rungs are zero.
- If a cascade ran, type extra gateway hops on top.
- Read mix. Do not call it recovery. Open cascade-pollution for auths per recovered order.
Failure modes
- Inventing a recovery % from Recycle column counts.
- Calling Recycle 1 a cascade hop.
- Mixing unique-decline exports into the ladder.
- Hopping hard fails and labeling them Recycle.
Worked example
None on this page yet. When one lands it will be a real case: what broke, the number, and what changed. Not a composite.
Glossary
- Recycle ladder
- CRM-scheduled later tries (Initial, Recycle 1, 2, 3+) on a billing report. Not the same as a same-minute cascade hop to another MID.
- Cascade hop
- An extra issuer message on one CRM try, often another MID. Sits on top of the recycle ladder — it is not Recycle 4.

FAQ
- Is Recycle 1 the same as a cascade hop?
- No. Recycle 1 is the next CRM-scheduled try (often hours or days later on the same path). A cascade hop is another issuer message, often another MID, on the same try.
- Does this page give a recovery %?
- No. That would invent a save rate. Type the ladder. Optional extra hops sit on top. Auths per recovered order lives on [cascade pollution](/manuals/cascade-pollution).
- Is this dunning by decline family?
- No. [Dunning](/manuals/dunning-calendar) picks days after a rebill fail by decline family. This page maps which machine fired — CRM recycle vs gateway cascade.
