Braintree first-hold short is not Authorize.net issuer-slice
Take ask $ minus approved hold $, then divide by ask $ on one Braintree vault window. That quotient × 100 is BT hold-short %.
Pair: Partial-auth gap on Payments. Authorize.net sibling: issuer-slice. Later Braintree door: partial-settle.
What you type
Requested auth $ — Cart dollars the Braintree vault sent as the ask.
Partial auth $ — Dollars the issuer actually parked on that same vault window.
BT hold-short % = (ask − approved) ÷ ask × 100. A fat BT hold-short % usually points at issuer or cart rules on that vault seat — chase that path; never invent a BT hold-short chip.
What not to do
Never invent BT hold-short %. Never paste an Authorize.net or NMI partial-auth CSV into Braintree ask / hold fields. Never treat a later settle short as a first-hold short. Never average every MID when one vault seat owns the short pile.

Procedure
- Type requested auth $ and partial auth $.
- Read gap $ and BT hold-short %.
- Chase issuer / cart rules when BT hold-short % is material.
Failure modes
- Inventing BT hold-short %.
- Dumping an Authorize.net or NMI partial-auth file into Braintree ask / hold fields.
- Treating a later settle short as a first-hold short.
Worked example
None on this page yet. When one lands it will be a real case: what broke, the number, and what changed. Not a composite.

FAQ
- Is this the Authorize.net issuer-slice page?
- No — that export lives under [Authorize.net issuer-slice](/manuals/authorize-net-partial-auth-gap). This door only reads Braintree vault ask $ vs approved hold $.
- Is this Braintree partial-settle?
- Later grain. [Partial-settle gap](/manuals/braintree-partial-settle-gap) divides partial-settled $ by captured $. Here the numerator is ask minus approved hold on the first auth.
- What BT hold-short % should I invent?
- None. Copy ask $ and approved hold $ from the same Braintree vault window.
