Braintree soft-decline mix is not Authorize.net soft-decline mix
On one Braintree decline file, soft (retryable) codes sit over every decline code. That ratio × 100 is BT soft-decline %.
Pair: Soft-decline share on Payments. Auth.net sibling: Auth.net soft. NMI sibling: NMI soft. Code-mix sibling: processor response skew.
Inputs
Soft declines — Issuer codes Braintree marks soft / retryable in that file.
All declines — Soft plus hard codes in the same Braintree decline file.
BT soft-decline % = soft ÷ all × 100. A tall BT soft-decline % usually means account-updater or retry seating is the lever on that MID — chase that seat; leave blank chips alone.
Hard stops
Leave BT soft-decline % blank rather than invent. Keep Auth.net and NMI decline rows out of Braintree boxes. Keep settlement-reject rows out of the soft pile. Keep one Braintree MID per run when that seat owns the soft mix.
Related: Payments, Auth.net soft, NMI soft, processor response skew, settlement reject.
Procedure
- Type soft declines and all declines.
- Read BT soft-decline %.
- Seat retry / updater when BT soft-decline % is material.
Failure modes
- Inventing BT soft-decline %.
- Loading Auth.net or NMI decline rows into Braintree inputs.
- Folding settle-reject counts into soft.
Worked example
None on this page yet. When one lands it will be a real case: what broke, the number, and what changed. Not a composite.

FAQ
- Is this Authorize.net soft-decline share?
- Different gateway ledger. [Soft-decline share](/manuals/authorize-net-soft-decline-share) stays on Authorize.net. Every soft and total here is Braintree-only.
- Is this NMI soft-decline share?
- Separate processor book. [Soft-decline share](/manuals/nmi-soft-decline-share) stays on NMI. Braintree owns the soft pile and the total here.
- What BT soft-decline % should I invent?
- None. Read soft count and total decline count from the same Braintree decline file.
