Residential surcharge is not dimensional weight
Residential surcharge (and siblings) is an accessorial for delivering to a residential classification — not the DIM weight formula. Mixing it into dimensional math invents freight. Type the line from this carrier invoice.
Pair: Residential surcharge — claim map on Stock. Billable weight: dimensional weight. Landed stack: landed COGS.
The fork
Residential classified. Accessorial posts per this contract. Include it when you type freight into contribution.
Commercial classified. Residential line should not apply — dispute mis-tags with the carrier, do not invent a credit percent.
Apartment / farm / limited access. Other accessorials may stack. Name each line — do not fold them into “residential.”
DIM still separate. Billable weight math stays on dimensional weight.
What not to do
Do not invent a residential dollar or percent chip. Do not fold residential into the DIM divisor. Do not ignore mis-tagged residential on commercial docks. Do not paste Amazon FBA residential myths onto DTC parcels. Do not skip retyping freight when the mix of residential ship-tos changes.

FAQ
- Is residential surcharge the same as DIM?
- No. [Dimensional weight](/manuals/dimensional-weight) is billable pounds/kg. Residential is a separate accessorial for the delivery type.
- Can I invent a typical residential fee?
- No. We invent none. Read this carrier contract and invoice lines.
- Does commercial ship-to kill residential forever?
- Only if the address and carrier classification match. Mis-tagged residential still bills the accessorial.
