Billable weight is not the scale alone

How to run thisStock / inventory4 steps
GuideDimensional weight — claim map · Calculator lives in the articleOpen

Billable weight is usually the greater of actual weight and dimensional (DIM) weight. Light, bulky cartons get charged as if they were heavier. Guessing a forum DIM divisor invents freight — and then invents contribution.

Pair: Dimensional weight — claim map on Stock. Unit cost stack: landed COGS. Who pays border: DDP vs DDU.

The fork

Actual heavier. Scale weight wins. Still confirm the carrier’s rounding rules.

DIM heavier. Volume ÷ divisor (from this contract) beats the scale. Pack smaller or accept the billable.

Multi-box / split ship. Each carton has its own billable weight — open split shipment CS for the tracking fork; do not average boxes into one invented weight.

International. Divisors and rounding differ by lane. Type the lane’s rule — invent none.

What not to do

Do not invent a DIM divisor or “typical” billable. Do not paste scale weight into contribution when DIM wins. Do not mix residential accessorials into DIM math. Do not reuse last carrier’s divisor on a new contract. Do not treat Amazon FBA fee myths as DTC parcel DIM.

Procedure

  1. Read this carrier’s divisor and rounding.
  2. Compute DIM; take the greater vs actual.
  3. Price each carton on split ship separately.
  4. Open landed-cogs for product cost stack.

Failure modes

  • Using scale-only when DIM wins.
  • Inventing a DIM divisor chip.
  • Folding residential accessorials into DIM.
  • Averaging multi-box weights into one invented number.

Worked example

None on this page yet. When one lands it will be a real case: what broke, the number, and what changed. Not a composite.

Glossary

Dimensional weight
Volume-based weight (L×W×H ÷ divisor) carriers use when greater than actual scale weight. Billable weight is usually the greater of the two.

FAQ

Is dimensional weight the same as landed COGS?
No. [Landed COGS](/manuals/landed-cogs) stacks product cost. This page is how carriers pick billable pounds/kg.
Can I use a public DIM divisor chip?
No. We invent none. Read this carrier / contract divisor and packaging.
Is this residential surcharge?
Related fee family, different line. This page is weight math, not the residential accessorial.
