DDP duty often stays paid on a return

How to run thisStock / inventory3 steps
CalculatorDDP duty on return · Calculator lives in the articleOpen

You prepaid duties so the parcel could deliver (DDP). The shopper returns the unit. The duty line does not automatically reverse. Brokers and 3PLs refund some, none, or a slice — and only inside a claim window. Type duty paid and the written recoverable $. We invent no duty percent.

Pair: DDP duty on return on Stock. Who paid inbound: DDP vs DDU. Unit stack: landed COGS. Return inventory: RMA cost.

What you type

Duty paid $ on this parcel (broker invoice / 3PL disbursement).

Written recoverable $ from the 3PL or customs broker claim rules for an exported return. Zero is allowed. Do not paste a blog “typical recovery.”

The calculator returns duty you eat (paid − recoverable). That eaten dollar still sits in contribution even if COGS “reverses” on a restock.

What not to do

Do not bid as if DDP duty comes back 1:1 with the refund. Do not mix DDU surprise-duty refusals into this claim (that is inbound who-pays). Do not skip the broker window. Do not invent a 90-day chip.

Procedure

  1. Type prepaid duty on this parcel.
  2. Type written recoverable $ from the broker/3PL.
  3. Eat the gap. Do not bid as if it reverses 1:1.

Failure modes

  • Assuming 100% duty recovery on every return.
  • Inventing a duty percent.
  • Mixing DDU surprise-duty refusals into this claim.

Worked example

None on this page yet. When one lands it will be a real case: what broke, the number, and what changed. Not a composite.

Glossary

Duty you eat

FAQ

Is this DDP vs DDU?
No. [DDP vs DDU](/manuals/ddp-vs-ddu) is who pays the inbound border. This page is whether that prepaid duty comes back on a return.
Do I assume 100% duty recovery?
No. Type the written recoverable $ from the broker or 3PL. Blank hope is how you invent contribution.
Is this landed COGS?
Related. [Landed COGS](/manuals/landed-cogs) stacks the unit. Uneaten duty on a return still belongs in that stack for the next bid.
