Name the sponsor bank under a PayFac

How to run thisMIDs4 steps
GuideSponsor bank vs PayFac — claim map · Calculator lives in the articleOpen

Under a PayFac, three names matter. The sponsor bank (acquiring bank) is the network member. The PayFac is the registered facilitator sitting under that bank. You are the sub-merchant. Confusing the brand with the bank is how MATCH letters bounce and history stories die.

This is not another PayFac-versus-ISO-versus-direct explainer — that shape lives on Payments. This is not when to leave. This is who holds the license and the MATCH file while you are still boarded.

Pair: Sponsor bank vs PayFac — claim map on MIDs.

Who holds what

Sponsor / acquiring bank. Legal name on the member side. Holds the Visa/Mastercard seat that sponsors the PayFac. Can query and file MATCH. Name this bank before you board — processor questions.

PayFac platform. Boards you, prices you, often settles you. Not the network member. A dashboard logo is not the bank.

You (sub-merchant). Sit under the PayFac’s master account. Processing history and MATCH aging usually belong to that stack unless they wrote a transfer.

What to get in writing

Legal name of the sponsor bank. That the PayFac is registered under that bank. Where MATCH inquiries go. Whether statements transfer if you leave.

What not to do

Do not mail a MATCH letter to a PayFac marketing address and call it done. Do not treat “we are the bank” sales language as the member name. Do not skip naming the bank because the blend looks cheap.

An ISV deciding whether to register as the PayFac is a different job: ISV → PayFac.

Related: MIDs, MATCH letter, leave PayFac, processor questions.

Procedure

  1. Get the sponsor bank’s legal name in writing.
  2. Confirm the PayFac is registered under that bank.
  3. Send MATCH letters to the bank, not the brand.
  4. Ask whether history transfers before you plan a leave.

Failure modes

  • Mailing MATCH to a PayFac marketing address.
  • Treating the dashboard brand as the acquiring bank.
  • Assuming processing history transfers without a written sentence.
  • Using this page as a leave-PayFac graduation slogan.

Worked example

None on this page yet. When one lands it will be a real case: what broke, the number, and what changed. Not a composite.

Glossary

FAQ

Is the PayFac brand the acquiring bank?
No. The PayFac is the platform. The sponsor (acquiring) bank is the member that holds the license with the networks.
Who do I write for MATCH when I am on a PayFac?
The acquiring / sponsor bank’s legal name — same rule as [the MATCH letter](/manuals/match-letter). The PayFac brand is not the member file.
Is this the same as deciding to leave a PayFac?
No. [Leaving](/manuals/leave-payfac) is cost and history. This page is who holds the seat while you are still on the platform.
