Count FBA and 3PL units separately for cover

How to run thisStock / inventory4 steps
GuideFBA vs 3PL cover — claim map · Calculator lives in the articleOpen

Days of cover needs an honest on-hand number. FBA sellable units and 3PL on-hand are usually two pools. Blending them invents cover on a channel that is empty. The formula types on-hand, units sold, and window days. This page is which units may enter that on-hand field.

Pair: FBA vs 3PL cover — claim map on Stock.

What counts as on-hand

FBA sellable. Available to ship from Amazon’s fulfillment for that ASIN. Not inbound, not reserved, not unfulfillable.

3PL / warehouse on-hand. Units physically available to pick at that warehouse for the channel you are advertising.

Not on-hand. On-order POs, in-transit to FBA, working / reserved, damaged, or stranded. Those do not refill today’s cover.

How to use the formula

Name the channel (Amazon FBA vs DTC 3PL). Type that pool’s on-hand into days of cover. Type sell-through from the same channel’s sales window. If you run both, run the calculator twice — do not average a fat 3PL into a thin FBA ASIN.

What not to do

Do not call inbound-to-FBA “on-hand.” Do not blend FBA + 3PL to keep ads on. Do not use FBA total inventory (including reserved) as sellable. Do not invent a 14-day chip.

Related: Stock, days of cover, cut ads before stockout, Amazon ads stop at zero.

Procedure

  1. Name the channel — FBA or 3PL.
  2. Type only that pool’s available on-hand.
  3. Run days of cover with that channel’s sell-through.
  4. Repeat for the other pool. Do not average.

Failure modes

  • Blending FBA and 3PL into one on-hand.
  • Counting inbound-to-FBA as cover.
  • Pasting FBA total inventory as sellable.
  • Funding Amazon ads from 3PL on-order.

Worked example

None on this page yet. When one lands it will be a real case: what broke, the number, and what changed. Not a composite.

FAQ

Can I add FBA and 3PL units into one days-of-cover?
Only if that SKU sells from one blended pool you actually ship from. Usually FBA and 3PL are separate — type each pool.
Do inbound-to-FBA units count as on-hand?
No. Working / inbound / reserved are not sellable on-hand. Same rule as on-order at a 3PL.
Is this the cover formula calculator?
No. [Days of cover](/manuals/days-of-cover) is on-hand ÷ sell-through for a named window. This page is which units belong in on-hand.
