An update-card email is not a recycle

How to run thisSubscriptions3 steps
CalculatorDunning email vs auth · Calculator lives in the articleOpen

Lifecycle mail that says update your card is not a recycle. A recycle is a live auth on the token. Mixing the two is how CS swears “we dunned” while the gateway sat quiet.

Pair: Dunning email vs auth on Subscriptions. Family days: dunning calendar. Which machine: recycle vs cascade. Soft vs hard: decline playbook.

What you type

Days since last auth — last gateway / CRM MIT try on this profile (including a recycle). Large number if none.

Days since last email — last “update card” / dunning mail. Zero if it went today.

If the email is newer than the auth, you mailed after the last live try. Put an auth on the calendar this family allows — or kill the token. If the auth is newer, do not spray another email instead of the next allowed try.

What not to do

Do not call an email open a recovered rebill. Do not invent a save rate. Do not run NSF days against expired while you wait for updater. Do not dump do-not-honor onto a second MID as “dunning.”

Related: Subscriptions, dunning calendar, recycle vs cascade, involuntary churn.

Procedure

  1. Type days since last gateway/CRM MIT try.
  2. Type days since last update-card email.
  3. If mail is newer, put a live auth on the family calendar — or kill the token.

Failure modes

  • Calling an email open a recovered rebill.
  • Mailing instead of the next allowed auth.
  • Inventing a save rate.

Worked example

None on this page yet. When one lands it will be a real case: what broke, the number, and what changed. Not a composite.

FAQ

Is this dunning by decline family?
No. [Dunning](/manuals/dunning-calendar) picks retry days by expired vs NSF vs do-not-honor. This page asks whether you actually authed or only mailed.
Is this recycle vs cascade?
No. [Recycle vs cascade](/manuals/recycle-vs-cascade) maps CRM ladder vs gateway hops. This page is email vs a live auth.
Does a click on update-card count as recovery?
No. Recovery is a settled MIT. Clicks are theater.
